What do you think makes a good teacher?

Someone who is flexible, as things change in Early Years all the time, we need to be able to follow children’s interests and be off plan, think outside the box and be creative.

A good teacher is passionate, excited about their job, approachable, caring, and someone who wants to listen.

What are you most looking forward to this term?

We have just started our phonics this week and the children have blown me away, the children are reading consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) words, sounding and blending. This is what makes me really excited as they are starting to read, in two or three weeks they will be writing words. It is amazing watching them going from not being able to form a letter to then watching them write words. I am really looking forward to seeing how they develop phonetically this term.

Which subject do you most enjoy teaching in school and why?

I enjoy literacy and understanding the world. In Early Years the two subjects are interlinked. We learn about the seasons, we go on an autumn walk, collecting leaves and talking about hibernation.

How do you know when you have had a good day?

That I am excited for the next day.

What are your hobbies?

I like going to the gym, skiing and I also enjoy walking my dog.

What is your favourite book?

A Monster Calls by Patrick Ness – I studied the book as part of my Children’s Literature Course and it was such a powerful book.

If you could be an animal for a day, what would you be and why?

A bird, as I would love to be able to fly around and be able to watch from above.
