It is with sadness that we announce that Professor Dame Elizabeth Fradd passed away on Sunday 12 May, her 75th birthday.

Elizabeth Fradd was a pupil at Farringtons School from 1960-1967 where her father was chaplain. She trained as a nurse and held a variety of posts as registered nurse, midwife and health visitor. She went on to support the nursing profession nationally, becoming Deputy Chief Nursing Officer for England and serving as Director of Nursing / Lead Director for reviews and inspections at the Commission for Health Improvement (CHI), now the Care Quality Commission (CQC). She has published widely and spoken on many occasions at both national and international conferences.

Dame Elizabeth had honorary doctorates from Wolverhampton, Nottingham and Birmingham City Universities, and held honorary professorships at two of them. In 2009 she was awarded the DBE for services to Nursing and Healthcare. She was made a Fellow of the Royal College of Nursing in 2004, which complements her honorary fellowships of the Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, the Queens Nursing Institute and the Faculty of Public Health.

Over the years Dame Elizabeth contributed her expertise to many national reviews including chairing the Health Visitor Taskforce launched by the government in 2011 and being a member of the Prime Minister’s Commission on the Future of Nursing and Midwifery between 2009 and 2010. She also accepted an invitation to advise Aboriginal health workers in the Australian outback and acted in an advisory capacity to China, the United States, Canada and Australia.

Previously, Dame Elizabeth was the High Sheriff of Nottinghamshire for 2020/21, Vice President of Rainbows Children’s Hospice, and an advisor to Justice Defenders. She was appointed a Deputy Lieutenant for Nottinghamshire in March 2016 by the Lord-Lieutenant by recommendation to the Prime Minister and approval of His Majesty The King.

Liz was a regular participant in Farringtons Alumni events and was the guest speaker at the Senior School Prize Giving in 2018.
