PRE-RECEPTION
We have had a fabulous week in Pre-Reception and been exceptionally busy! We had a great trip to Woodlands farm and the children enjoyed meeting all the animals.
The children have continued to embrace learning about dinosaurs. This week we have learnt about herbivores (animals that eat only plants). We are continuing to encourage the children to describe the different features of the dinosaurs and think about why they might have had these features. We were very impressed by the language and vocabulary used by some of the children.
MATHS
In Maths, we have used the traditional tale The Three Billy Goats Gruff to teach the children the positional language ‘on’, ‘over’ and ‘under’. Using dinosaur small worlds, we have also taught the children the key vocabulary ‘in front’, ‘next to’ and behind. We have also explored positional language playing active games such as ‘hide from the T-Rex’ in which children hid herbivores around the setting and the child with the T-Rex had to find them following their friend’s instructions.
PHONICS
In Phonics, we have learnt the phoneme (sound) ‘w’. This is another challenging pure sound for the children to make as they instinctively say ‘wer’. You can look at the Little Wandle video at 16 seconds to listen to the pure sound.
PSHE
In our Jigsaw PSHE session this week we thought about how to help a friend who feels lonely.
Next Week
Next week we will be covering the following topics:
- Maths: Compare amounts of groups of objects
- Phonics: Pronounce the sound ‘y’
- Jigsaw PSHE: To talk about what they like about their friends
- Literacy/topic: Dinosaurs that were carnivores
RECEPTION
We have had a very busy and exciting week in Reception, exploring life cycles and learning lots of new and interesting facts.
In Understanding the World
We have been learning about the life cycle of butterflies. The children were very excited to welcome five tiny caterpillars into Hedgehog Class and have already been fascinated watching them move and grow. We are really looking forward to observing them as they change through each stage of the life cycle.
Junk Modelling
This week, we also enjoyed some fantastic junk modelling. The children created animal models, using their literacy skills to design their ideas first by listing the materials they would need. Once their models were complete, they wrote about the process from start to finish.
Phonics
In Phonics, we began Phase 4. The children learned the tricky words some, come, love and do. We focused on short vowel CVCC and CCVC words and practised reading longer sentences. The children also wrote dictated sentences, such as “Bring me the truck so I can plug it in.” When they completed these accurately, they were challenged to write their own full sentence using one of the spellings from the session.
Maths
In Maths, we continued our topic ‘To 20 and beyond’. The children have been exploring numbers between 10 and 100, focusing on how many tens and ones make each number. They are becoming much more confident with this. We also continued to look at how teen numbers can be made, for example understanding that 13 is made from 10 and 3 and then using their number bond knowledge to find other ways to make 13. Please continue practising number bonds to 10 at home, as confidence with these is essential before moving on to more complex number work.
