PRE-RECEPTION
As the weather was so hot this week, we have been learning about the seaside. We have looked at photographs of seaside holidays of the past and present. Many of the children had not seen any black and white photographs before and did not recognise this style of photography as being historic; instead, they thought the photographs were black and white as it was a stormy day. Please look through any old family photographs with your child to compare past and present similarities and differences.
In addition to our history focus, We have also learnt about keeping safe on the beach in the sun. As a result, the children are now aware that they should:
- Slip on a t-shirt
- Slop on some sunscreen
- Slap on a hat
- Seek shade
- Slide on some sunglasses
- Stay hydrated
Furthermore, we also spoke about water safety on holiday. The children have learnt that they must not go in or near water without one of their adults.
Meanwhile, in both Maths and Phonics, we have consolidated our prior learning. Looking ahead, we will be doing the same next week.
We are collecting all wordless reading books this week to allow us to perform our book audit.
RECEPTION
Literacy
In Literacy this week, the children completed their first piece of levelled writing, using a picture as inspiration. Ultimately, this type of writing allows us to see how well they can independently apply their phonics, tricky words and sentence writing. To prepare for this, we spent time throughout the week exploring the image together, sharing ideas about what might be happening, and using our imaginations to build a story. First, we created a story map as a class, and following this, the pupils had a go at creating their own to plan what might happen in their stories.
Understanding the World
Meanwhile, in Understanding the World, the children really enjoyed their French lesson, where they learned how to play Pétanque. For context, this is a traditional French boules game where players aim to throw their balls as close as possible to a small target ball called the cochonnet.
Phonics
In addition to our writing, we revisited the suffixes ‘-ing’ and ‘-ed’ during Phonics, reminding the pupils that these letter combinations can make a ‘t’ or ‘d’ sound. Alongside this, we continued to practise reading and writing longer words by breaking them into smaller parts to help with blending.
Maths
Finally, in Maths, the children completed their end of Summer Term assessment. This comprehensive review included topics we have covered throughout the term, such as doubles, adding more, recognising equal and unequal groups, and sharing.
