Pre-Reception & Reception Highlights

PRE-RECEPTION

It has been a pleasure to welcome the children back for the final half-term of the academic year. It is hard to believe that the year is nearly over and that so many of the children will be moving on to their Reception classes in September.

The children were very enthusiastic about delivering their presentation to the panel for the Walker Awards. They had great fun and answered the questions confidently.

This week, we have begun our topic, Pirates. The children were excited to see our pirate-themed role-play area and have had great fun making up adventures. They have been learning about pirates from the past and had fun making up their own pirate names.

As part of our topic, we have been looking at the oceans that pirates sailed and how pollution impacts life beneath the waves. The children have been thinking about items that can be recycled and reused. We will continue with this idea of reusing materials when we create junk models in the coming weeks.

MATHS

In Maths, this week, we have revisited the composition of number (how larger numbers are made up of smaller numbers). We did this through fun and engaging activities, such as pirates finding treasure. The children had to decide how many jewels were in the chest and how many the pirate had.

PHONICS

In Phonics, we have begun to identify the final sound in words. Our target sounds were ‘ck’ and ‘x’. We are also working on segmenting CVC words to give the children a good foundation for their writing in Reception.

PSHE

In our Jigsaw PSHE lesson, we began by singing ‘Heads, Shoulders, Knees and Toes’. We then added different body parts suggested by the children. We thought about how each body part helps us. For example, your fingers help you to do jigsaw puzzles and your feet help you to run. We drew around one of the children, and then everyone helped to label the body parts.

RECEPTION

Understanding the World

This week we have been exploring summer. We briefly recapped our knowledge of other seasons before exploring what happens in summer. We talked about using our 5 senses to help us describe the signs of summer, comparing this to the other seasons.

Jigsaw PSHE

This week the children used their phonic skills to label parts of the body on a large diagram, and we were very impressed with their knowledge. We then discussed the uses of different parts of the body; we may have some budding biologists in Reception.

Literacy

At the beginning of the week the children enjoyed sharing their half term homework with the rest of the class. They confidently talked about what their favourite book was and why. We are very proud at how much progress they have made in their presenting skills. Thank you to all parents for the help and support you put in to help your child with their posters.

In our teacher led activity this week the children wrote full sentences about summer. As an additional challenge we encouraged them to use the word ‘because’.

Phonics

This week during Phonics we focused on vowel sounds, CVCC, and CCVC words. This including reading words such as growl, float, storm and boast. In our daily phonic sessions, we continued to read a sentence and then write it, as well focusing on 3 spellings. We remind the children to check and make sure it is a good sentence by including a capital letter, finger spaces and punctuation.

Walker Awards

As I am sure you aware the children across the school have been busily preparing for the Walker Awards. This week the reception children presented their bid for a new mud kitchen. We were extremely proud of how they did. They spoke clearly and explained why they would like a new mud kitchen. They also answered questions from the panel afterwards.
