PRE-RECEPTION
We have had another very busy week in Pre-Reception.
LITERACY
In our Literacy lessons, we have introduced our new story Errol’s Garden. The children enjoyed listening to and engaging in this book and have made links to our own school EYFS garden and their planting. The broad beans that the children planted have begun to grow, and they have enjoyed watching their quick growth. In our book, Errol and his father drew a plan for their garden; the children have drawn some wonderful plans for their own dream roof gardens in the writing area.
Understanding the World – British Science Week
We have had great fun celebrating British Science Week. The children have looked at the roots and shoots of the plants we are growing using magnifying glasses. They have made colourful insects that climb the wall and checked that they each had six legs.
We have encouraged the children to try new vegetables this week. They tried courgette, apple and banana muffins on Tuesday and had tasting sessions for carrots, peppers and sweetcorn. It is definitely a work in progress for Bear Cubs. Thank you to those of you who have supported this initiative at home.
PHONICS
In Phonics, we have learnt how to pronounce the sound ‘b’. We have taught the children the rhyme “Put your lips together and say b as you open them b b b.” Watch the Little Wandle video at 48 seconds for the pure sound.
MATHS
In Maths, we have introduced length and height. We have taught the children the key vocabulary ‘short’, ‘shorter’, ‘tall’, ‘taller’, ‘long’ and ‘longer’. For extra challenge, we have also taught them ‘shortest’, ‘longest’ and ‘tallest’.
JIGSAW PSHE
In our Jigsaw PSHE lesson we thought about food that is healthy and food that is not so healthy.
We have had fun learning the poem Blow a Kiss by Joseph Coelho.
RECEPTION
We have had another exciting and busy week in Reception. To give you a glimpse into our classroom, we are delighted to share what the children have been learning.
Understanding the World
As part of our topic on growth, we focused on how humans grow and change. The children loved listening to the story Once There Were Giants by Martin Waddell, which helped us explore the different stages of life baby, toddler, child, teenager, adult and elderly. In addition to the story, one of the highlights of the week was looking at everyone’s baby photos and guessing who they were!
Literacy
Linking to our learning about human growth, we talked about the things we could do as babies compared to all the wonderful things we can do now as children. The children enjoyed sharing their ideas and noticing how much they have grown and developed.
Phonics
Moving on to Phonics, we revised phase 3 phonemes and focused on reading and writing words that include two or more digraphs. We also reviewed some tricky words from phases 2 and 3. The children practised reading and writing sentences containing these sounds, such as: “The queen has seven sheep and a shark.”
Maths
Meanwhile, in Maths, we continued our work on the block building 9 and 10. During these sessions, we explored number composition, doubling, and identifying odd and even numbers.
Understanding the World – British Science Week
Finally, to celebrate British Science Week, we continued investigating plants and what they need to grow. We carried out an experiment using food colouring and roses to observe how water travels through a stem. Although this did not work quite as expected with the roses, so next week we will try the experiment again using different flowers and see what happens!
