What Early Years got up to this week

Chinese New Year

PRE-RECEPTION

We have had another exciting week in Pre-Reception. On Tuesday we celebrated Chinese New Year. We had an assembly and a workshop provided by Mrs. Cheng, our Senior School Mandarin teacher. I was very proud of how well the children sat and listened.

As part of our topic about Australia, we have read ‘Wombat Goes Walkabout’ by Michael Morpurgo. The children joined in with the repetitive phases. We discussed how Wombat was the hero in the end. We have also looked at the variety of Animals that can be found in Australia and have incorporated this into our artwork.

Maths

In Maths, we have started to explore the number 4. We are encouraging the children to recognise the numerals 1, 2, 3, and 4 and they have matched groups of objects to the relevant numeral. We have also explored ‘one less’ within 4. We have also introduced four-sided shapes (rectangles and squares).

Phonics

In Phonics, we have taught the children to pronounce the ‘o’ (as in mop) phoneme (sound) using the rhyme ‘make your mouth into round shape and say o o o’.

RECEPTION

What a busy, fun filled week we have had in Reception!

Understanding the World

This week we continued our travels and arrived in China just in time to celebrate the Chinese New Year. We spent the week learning about how it is celebrated and celebrating it in class.  On Tuesday we attended a Chinese New Year workshop, learning about the Chinese language. We also completed different activities, and we all enjoyed a Chinese themed lunch.

Literacy

In Literacy we learnt about the Chinese zodiac. We read the story of the Great Race and acted it out. The children have enjoyed activities where we ordered the animals into the order of the zodiac cycle. We used this information to write sentences about it in our literacy books.

Phonics

This week we completed Phase 3 of our Little Wandle Programme and have now learnt all the phonemes for Reception. We learnt our final phonemes ‘er,’ and ‘air.’ In class we practised saying the sounds, blending the sounds together to read words, for example ‘f-air.’ We then practised writing spellings using the phonemes. We continued to read and write short captions, for example ‘The chair was in the air.’

This week we introduced the tricky words ‘are,’ ‘sure’ and ‘pure.’

Maths

This week we completed our learning on 6, 7 and 8. This included one more and less, and addition within these numbers. We have been exploring addition by combining two groups of objects and further challenged the children with pictorial representations.

Expressive arts and design

In celebration of the Chinese New Year, we have been busy making snakes this week. We also painted, decorated our own Chinese New Year wallets, and put coins into them to share with our family.
