PRE-RECEPTION
This week, we have been learning about the School’s Catering Team as part of our community heroes topic. We were lucky enough to take the children to meet them in the school kitchen. The children asked many questions and had the opportunity to make biscuits. We will be selling these tomorrow at the Christmas Fayre.
MATHS
In Maths, we have been working on simple two-step repeating patterns (colour, size, shape, sound and movement). We will continue to investigate patterns further over the next week. The children enjoyed making up repeating patterns using movement such as clapping, jumping and stamping.
PHONICS
In Phonics, we have taught the children to recognise the ‘i’ phoneme (sound) and to pronounce this correctly. We have used the phrase, “Pull your lips back and make the i sound at the back of your mouth.”
Next Week
We will be kicking off the festive season with lots of creative activities and by listening to the nativity story. The school chaplain has been reading part of the story to the children each week.
In Maths, we will continue to work on simple two-step repeating patterns (colour, size, shape, sound and movement).
In Phonics, we will learn to recognise and pronounce the phoneme ‘n’.
In Literacy, we will be looking at the story Twas the Night Before Christmas and linking this to the nursery rhyme Here We Go Round the Christmas Tree.
In our Jigsaw PSHE lessons, we will be talking about standing up for yourself.
RECEPTION
It has been an eventful week in Reception!
Literacy
Continuing with our topic community heroes, we explored the role of postal workers. The children thoroughly enjoyed reading The Jolly Postman by Janet and Allan Ahlberg. We began the week by looking at the structure of a letter and then used our phonics skills to write letters to Santa. Once finished, we will be taking a trip to the post box to send our letters to the North Pole.
Maths
This week, in Maths, we explored rectangles and squares. We learned that both shapes have four straight sides and four corners and discovered that a square is a special rectangle where all sides are equal in length.
In addition, we also began to explore time, discussing key events in our routine and comparing what happens during the day and night. The children practiced using language such as first, then, after, before, day, night, morning, afternoon, today and tomorrow to describe different events.
Phonics
Ahead of next week’s phonics assessment, we revisited all the phonemes and tricky words learned so far. We practiced writing words and sentences, focusing on digraphs and scanning words when reading. Specifically, this week, we learned the tricky words ‘we,’ ‘me,’ and ‘be.’
Financial Literacy in Action
Our Early Years children have been busy preparing for the Christmas Fayre tomorrow! They have made beautiful decorations and baked delicious biscuits to sell at their very own stall.
The stall will be open in the dining hall from 11.00am-1.00pm and we are inviting Early Years children to take turns as shopkeepers. This hands-on experience will help them learn about handling money, buying and selling in a real-world setting.
Items will be priced at £1 and we will be accepting cash only so that the children can practice using real money.
Next week, the children will count their takings and decide together on something special to purchase for the Early Years outdoor area. This is a fantastic way to see the value of their hard work!
Christmas Nativity
We are looking forward to performing our Christmas nativity on Tuesday.
