Early Years Blog
When it comes to a child’s development, some of the most essential milestones happen long before they ever pick up a pencil or learn to read. Gross motor skills — those that involve large muscle groups used for movements like crawling, walking, jumping and balancing — are fundamental to a child’s overall growth. At Farringtons Prep School, we understand that these early physical skills form the bedrock for lifelong learning and wellbeing.
Why Are Gross Motor Skills So Important?
Gross motor development directly impacts a child’s ability to explore their environment and engage fully in the classroom. Strong gross motor skills support:
- Physical health – Active children build strength, coordination and endurance
- Cognitive development – Physical movement links to brain development, aiding focus memory and problem-solving
- Social skills – Group games and outdoor activities promote cooperation, turn-taking and teamwork
- Emotional wellbeing – Movement can be a powerful outlet for energy and emotion, boosting mood and self-esteem
How We Support Gross Motor Skills at Farringtons Prep
We commit to providing children with the space, time, and support they need to thrive physically. Our beautiful, expansive grounds provide a rich environment for outdoor exploration. Through our Forest School and outdoor learning environment, we encourage children to challenge themselves physically in a safe, supervised setting. Every outdoor session aims to develop coordination, agility and confidence.
Specialist PE Teaching
From the earliest years, children benefit from specialist Physical Education lessons. These sessions are age-appropriate, focusing on movement skills such as running, hopping, throwing, and catching. These lessons are all delivered in a way that’s fun, inclusive and accessible to all learners.
Enrichment Through Extra-Curricular Activities
We offer a wide range of after-school clubs and activities that further promote gross motor development, including gymnastics and balance bike lessons. These experiences not only build physical strength but also foster perseverance and a love of movement.
Purpose-Built Learning Environments
Our Early Years classrooms are designed with movement in mind. Flexible spaces, engaging resources and child-led activities encourage children to be active participants in their learning journey. Whether building with large construction blocks or navigating an obstacle course, physical learning integrates into everyday experiences.
A Holistic Approach to Development
By nurturing gross motor skills alongside social, emotional, and academic development, we ensure that our pupils are not only school-ready but life-ready. When children receive the freedom to move, play, and explore, they gain the physical confidence and independence that empower them in every aspect of their education.
