PRE-RECEPTION
We have had another busy and enjoyable week in Pre-Reception.
MATHS
In Maths, the children have been matching buttons, wellies and towers. Additionally, they are beginning to solve ‘odd one out’ problems, which require deeper thinking and are proving quite challenging.
LITERACY
This week, we read The Scarecrows’ Wedding by Julia Donaldson and acted out the story together. During the activity, the children used their voices to recreate animal sounds and moved like the different characters. Furthermore, we learned why farmers use scarecrows and used our fine and gross motor skills to create our own school scarecrows.
PHONICS
In Phonics, we continued developing the children’s ability to ‘tune into sounds’ through body percussion and musical instruments. Meanwhile, the children explored sounds they may hear at home and enjoyed sharing information about their families, thereby supporting their personal, social and emotional development.
PSHE
During our Jigsaw PSHE lesson, we focused on taking turns, sharing and thinking about each other’s feelings. The children may tell you about an ‘argument’ between Mrs Webster and Mrs Derby and how they helped resolve it! They encouraged them to apologise and explained the importance of taking turns. We have been teaching the children to use the phrase: “Can I play with that when you have finished with it?”
Next Week
Looking ahead to next week, we will be celebrating autumn through a range of activities designed to develop the children’s personal, social and emotional, physical development and communication and language skills.
RECEPTION
LITERACY
Continuing with our topic ‘Ourselves,’ the children talked about their families. They clearly enjoyed sharing stories about their loved ones! To build on this, we further developed our listening and speaking skills by asking questions to find out more information. In addition, we also explored several books that celebrate the differences between families.
MATHS
In Maths, we continued with the module on ‘Match, Sort and Compare.’ Specifically, our focus this week, was on comparing. We compared objects by size, length, height and which group had more or fewer items. To support this, we modelled and encouraged the children to use mathematical language such as bigger/smaller, tallest/shortest, long/short, fewer and more. As a result, the children really enjoyed applying their new learning to practical problem-solving activities, for example, organising themselves into a line from shortest to tallest.
Phonics
Meanwhile in Phonics, we learnt the phonemes ‘i, n, m, and d.’ In class, we practised saying the sounds, blending them together to read words (e.g., ‘t-a-p’), and finally practising letter formation by writing the letters.
Expressive Arts and Design
As part of our ‘Ourselves’ topic, we have encouraged the children to create representations of their families using loose parts. ‘Loose parts’ play allows children to be creative, curious and imaginative, using a range of materials with no set outcome. The results were fantastic.
