PRE-RECEPTION

It was fantastic to see so many of you come along to our Pre-Reception Sports Activity Morning on Wednesday. The weather was ideal and the children had great fun taking part in the activities. We are sure you were as proud of them as we were. They listened carefully to and followed Mrs Webber’s instructions and were able to demonstrate their skills to you.

MATHS

Our Maths learning this week has been based around the theme ‘What comes before..?’. The children have worked hard to use the stem sentence ‘… comes before … ‘ to explain their reasoning for the placing of numerals on a number line. They found this a little more challenging than ‘… comes after …’.  Next week we will consolidate ‘What comes before…?’ and ‘What comes after…’ and encourage the children to use our key vocabulary. We created a number line on the floor and the children had great fun jumping to the number before and after.

LITERACY

In Literacy this week, we have continued to read stories about pirates. The children have made up lots of their own adventures and have buried treasure in lots of places around the classroom.

RECEPTION

Understanding the World

This week in Understanding the World, we have been thinking about how and why it is important to look after the world we live in. To begin our exploration, the children thoroughly enjoyed sharing the story Clean Up! by Nathan Bryon, which sparked some thoughtful discussions. Following this, we explored simple environmental actions like recycling and avoiding waste. As a result, the children showed a growing awareness of how their actions can make a difference.

Literacy

Building on this, the children designed posters explaining why it is important to look after our world. They had some wonderful ideas and clearly enjoyed representing them. In addition to this, as part of our Our Imagination topic, we also explored characters in stories. Specifically, pupils described familiar characters before ultimately creating their own.

Phonics

Meanwhile, this week in Phonics we focused on long vowel sounds within CCVC, CCCVC, CCV and CCVCC words, reading examples such as street, screech and screen. Alongside this, in our daily sessions, the children continued practising reading sentences and then writing them independently. To support their writing, we have been encouraging them to check their work carefully by including a capital letter, finger spaces, and appropriate punctuation to form a clear sentence.

Maths

This week in Maths, the children have been developing their problem-solving skills by exploring true and false statements and explaining their reasoning. During our carpet sessions, we have begun looking at simple maps and positional language. In particular, the children have been practising using words such as build, recreate, behind, below, next to, opposite, under and in front of to describe where things are.
