Early Years Update & Next Term’s Preview

Pre-Reception assembly

PRE-RECEPTION

It was great to see so many of you at our assembly this week. We are very proud of all the pupils. After all, it is not easy to stand in front of the whole school or perform in front of parents, but they all rose to the challenge.

As you know, this week we consolidated our Maths and Phonics learning from this term. We have done this largely through interactive games, stories and play.

Looking ahead to next term, our overarching topic is Pirates. To bring this theme to life, we will be looking at the key texts The Night Pirates (Peter Harris & Deborah Allwright) and The Pirates Are Coming (John Condon & Matt Hunt). In addition, we will be using our imagination through role play, creative activities and songs. Alongside our pirate them, we will also be looking at the text On Sudden Hill written by Linda Sarah and illustrated by Benji Davies.

Meanwhile our Maths focus next term will be:

  • Composition of 3 and 4
  • What comes after…?
  • What comes before…?
  • Numbers to 5

PHONICS

In Phonics, we have recently been working on identifying the initial sound in words. Next term, we will progress to hearing the final sound in words. Crucially, these are both essential skills that form a firm foundation for writing. Children who have already mastered these skills will move on to segmenting CVC words, such as c-a-t, d-o-g and m-a-t. At the same time, we will also continue to ‘tune into sound’ to develop the children’s phonological awareness.

PSHE

Our upcoming Jigsaw PSHE ‘puzzle’ will be Changing Me. In Pre-Reception, this involves singing Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes and thinking about what each part of our body does for us. We will also consider how we can look after our bodies (using the term ‘respect’). As the weeks progress, the children will reflect on how they have grown and changed over time. Finally, we will prepare the children for their move from Pre-Reception to Reception and celebrate their accomplishments.

RECEPTION

The children have enjoyed a busy week consolidating their learning from across the term.

Understanding the World

To conclude our Amazing Animals topic, we focused specifically on minibeasts. The children especially enjoyed learning fascinating facts about bees, spiders and other minibeasts. In addition to this, we had great fun solving ‘who am I?’ riddles, and the children even created some of their own for others to guess.

Literacy

This week, we explored non-fiction texts, focusing on books about minibeasts. In particular, the children learned how to use contents pages to find information and discussed how facts are presented on each page. They then applied their learning by creating their own mini beast fact books, which they were very proud of.

Phonics

Alongside our literacy work, we completed our phonics assessments for the summer 1 term. The assessment included revisiting phonemes, reading 15 words covered this term, and recognising tricky words.

Maths

This week, we revisited key concepts from the term and explored sharing. Through hands-on-activities, the children learned to share objects fairly by moving one item at a time. To wrap up the term, we also revisited doubling, one more/one less, odd and even numbers and composition.
