What Early Years got up to this week

Prep School House Activity Morning

PRE-RECEPTION

This week, we have been learning about Spring.  We have learnt that the weather in Spring is changeable; for instance, we can experience warm, cold, sun and rain all in one day.  In addition to the weather, we learnt that many animals have their offspring in the Spring and learnt the names of some ‘baby’ animals. To see this in action, we went to the nature pond in our outdoor classroom and observed the frogspawn.  We are looking forward to visiting again to see how it has changed next week.

Thank you to Sammy’s mum who came to talk to the children about how they celebrate Iranian New Year. The children were very excited about having chocolate. We all agreed that it was a lovely way to celebrate new beginnings and new starts.

PHONICS

During Phonics, we have learnt how to pronounce the sound ‘f’. We have taught the children the rhyme “Open your lips a little; put your teeth on your bottom lip and push the air out to make the sound fffff.” You can watch the Little Wandle video at 50 seconds for the pure sound.

MATHS

Meanwhile, in Maths, we have explored mass. The children have learnt to use balance scales and are beginning to use the key vocabulary ‘heavy’, ‘heavier’, ‘light’ and ‘lighter’ to compare the weights of different objects.  We also made our own balance scales using coat hangers, string, and cups.

PSHE

In our Jigsaw PSHE lesson, we learnt about how important a bedtime routine is to help us get our all-important sleep. We spoke about the different bedtime routines that the children have. We listened to lullabies, had a ‘bedtime’ story, and noticed how relaxed they made us feel.

NEXT WEEK

Looking ahead to next week, we will think about hygiene and the importance of washing your hands before eating and after going to the toilet.

In Phonics we will introduce the ‘l’ sound in Phonics.

In Maths, we will be learning about capacity (the amount a container can hold) with a focus on the key vocabulary ‘full’, ‘nearly full’, ‘empty’ and ‘nearly empty’. As this is a very practical activity, and we hope the children have lots of fun pouring water from one container to another.  Therefore, please ensure the children have a spare change of clothes at school if they get wet while exploring capacity.

RECEPTION

We have had another fun and exciting week in Reception, filled with lots of learning, exploring and healthy habits!

Understanding the World

This week our focus was How We Stay Healthy. The children learned that keeping healthy involves many things eating a balanced diet, exercising, keeping clean, talking about our feelings, and dressing appropriately for the weather. They really enjoyed discussing the different ways we can take care of our bodies and minds.

Literacy

In Literacy, we reflected on our healthy living learning and wrote sentences about how to stay healthy. The children also took part in a variety of healthy themed activities throughout the week they were very proud of the work they produced.

Phonics

Our Phonics learning this week included: Reading and writing longer words, ending in -ing and compound words.

We also practised writing full sentences, such as: “It is fun chatting and singing in the rooftop garden.” Alongside this, we revisited the phase 2 and 3 tricky words.

Maths

We have begun our new unit on 3D shapes, learning their names and properties. We have also revisited our building 9 and 10 block by working through a series of true/false reasoning questions. The children are becoming much more confident explaining their thinking—well done, everyone!

PSED (Personal, Social & Emotional Development)

To conclude, we started our new Jigsaw unit: healthy me. We talked about ways to stay safe and healthy, including our bedtime routines and what helps us feel calm before going to sleep.
