PRE-RECEPTION
What a busy half term we have had!
The children have loved learning about the Chinese Lunar New year; this has been achieved through stories, drama/dance, food tasting and craft activities.
We have learnt several new poems this half term and the children are gaining confidence when reciting them. This week’s poem was called Wild Beast by Evaleen Stein. The children have enjoyed growling like a bear and roaring like a lion.
MATHS
In Maths, the children have been learning about the number 5. We sang songs about 5 little ducks and thought about how many ducks we had left and how many had not come back. The children are beginning to understand that 5 can be made up of 2 and 3, 4 and 1 or 5 and 0.
After half term we will be looking at a new topic, growing and planting:
- Introduction to growing and planting
- Introducing the ‘r’ sound in phonics
- Exploring Jack and the Beanstalk in literacy
- Continuing to focus on the number 5 in Maths
- Learning about the traditions and celebrations of Easter
reception
This week marks the final week of our journey around the world as we come to the end of this half term’s topic.
Understanding the World
We stayed in China this week to celebrate Chinese New Year. The children loved learning about the traditions linked to this festival. We shared the story of The Great Race and discovered how each lunar year is named after an animal.
In class, the children practised their fine motor skills using chopsticks and created bright, colourful artwork, including dragons and blossom trees. They also tried writing Chinese characters.
Literacy
In Literacy, the children thought about the facts they have learnt throughout the topic. They practised rehearsing their sentences aloud to check that they made sense. Then they used their phonic knowledge to write their sentences independently and reread them to ensure accuracy.
Phonics
We have now learned all the Reception phonemes. This week we have been practising reading longer words by “chunking” and blending syllables together for example, sunset and laptop.
The children also used their phonics to write full sentences, such as: I can see the cow in the farmyard.
Maths
This week, we consolidated our learning from across the half term. We explored different ways numbers can be represented, the composition of numbers 2–8, doubling, and identifying odd and even numbers.
We also completed our half-term assessments.
