PRE RECEPTION
This week we have been reading the story Mama Panya’s Pancakes by Mary & Rich Chapman. We have been making our own pancakes with playdough, sharing tasty pancakes with our friends, and acting out the story. The children have learnt the repeating phrase “a little bit and a little bit more” which was Mama Panya’s answer to all her son’s questions.
PHONICS
In Phonics, we have taught the children to pronounce the sound ‘e’ phoneme (sound) using the rhyme ‘Open your mouth wide; and say e e e’. Please feel free to watch the Little Wandle phase 2 sounds video (at 26 seconds) to listen to the pure sound being demonstrated.
MATHS
In Maths, the children have been learning to understand the cardinal principle. This is understanding that the final number they say when counting in order is the whole amount. We have continued to encourage the children to use sentences to discuss the amounts. For example, “There are 2 red counters and 2 blue counters. There are 4 altogether.”
RECEPTION
Wow, what a wonderfully busy and adventure filled week we have had in Reception!
Understanding the World
Our world adventures continued as we journeyed across Australia! The children loved discovering famous landmarks, exploring the variety of landscapes, and learning about the incredible animals that live in Australia. They were especially fascinated by the Great Barrier Reef its colourful corals and sea creatures sparked lots of thoughtful questions and conversations.
Later in the week, we boarded our classroom aeroplane once again and set off for China! We will continue learning about this vibrant country next week, perfectly timed with the celebrations of Chinese New Year.
Literacy
In Literacy, we brought together all our learning about Australia and the other countries we’ve visited. The children used the flip charts we created to support them in thinking of their own independent sentences. They worked hard to record their ideas, showing growing confidence in using their phonics and writing skills.
Phonics
This week we completed our Phase 2 and Phase 3 phonics assessments. Your child’s assessment has been sent home in their homework book. Please take some time to look through it together and revisit any sounds, words or tricky words that were a bit tricky. We will continue reviewing these areas as a class next week.
Maths
In Maths, we revisited and extended our learning into length and height, using nonstandard units (such as cubes) to make comparisons and measurements. We also explored time and sequencing. After reading Jasper’s Beanstalk, the children sequenced the events of the story, ordering the days of the week and matching them to what Jasper did each day. They really enjoyed piecing the story together!
Expressive Arts & Design
Our creative focus this week was inspired by Australia. The children produced stunning Indigenous style watercolour artwork, experimenting with patterns and colours.
They also followed step-by-step instructions to draw a koala, adding attention to detail.
