PRE-RECEPTION
We have had yet another busy week in Pre-Reception! It was lovely to see so many families at the fireworks on Friday. The children seemed to have a lot of fun and were excited to share their stories on Monday.
Phonics
The children have been working extremely hard in Phonics and are enjoying our new Little Wandle Foundations games. This week, we have taught the children how to pronounce the ‘a’ phoneme (sound) and have used the pronunciation phrase, “Open your mouth wide and make the ‘a’ sound at the back of your mouth: ‘a-a-a’,” to explain how to produce it. They are also working on learning to spot words that have the initial sound ‘a’.
Maths
In Maths, we have focused on the numbers 1 & 2. We made flapjacks using one spoonful of each ingredient to make a single flapjack. We have searched the classroom for items that we only have one of, and then for items that we have two of.
In our topic lessons this week, we have learned about Remembrance. The children took part in the service and were very respectful and well-behaved. We are very proud of them all.
Looking ahead to next week, as part of our community heroes topic, we will base our Literacy and Language sessions around the school buses and their drivers, and the role they play in keeping our school running smoothly. We will also share the rhyming book Car, Car, Truck, Jeep by Nick Sharratt and Katrina Charman with the children.
NEXT WEEK
In Phonics, we will learn to pronounce the ‘t’ sound (phoneme) correctly and identify objects that begin with this sound.
In Maths, we will continue to work on the number 2. We will introduce the children to the rhyme “1, 2, Buckle My Shoe” and do lots of work on subitising (saying how many without counting) both 1 and 2 on dice patterns and in irregular patterns.
RECEPTION
We have had a busy and exciting week in hedgehog class!
Literacy
Continuing with our theme: community heroes, we focused our learning on people who help us in hospitals. The children learned about the different roles of doctors, nurses, paramedics, midwives and surgeons. We discussed the different reasons people visit the hospital and looked at some of the equipment they may see there.
The children were especially fascinated by X-ray machines. We explored the different bones we could see on a skeleton image and compared these to our own bodies.
Maths
In Maths, we explored shape, focusing on circles and triangles. We talked about their properties using vocabulary such as straight sides, curved sides and corners. Linked to this topic, we explored the artist Kandinsky, who used circles and triangles in his abstract work. The children thoroughly enjoyed creating their own Kandinsky-inspired artwork.
We also explored positional language, learning how to use the vocabulary in, on, besides, next to, behind and between when describing where objects are in relation to one another.
Phonics
This week we learned the phonemes: v, w, x and y. We practised:
- Saying the sounds aloud
- Blending the sounds to read words (e.g. v-e-t)
- Writing the letters using cursive formation
We also introduced the tricky words: and, has, his and her. Tricky words are those that cannot be easily decoded (sounded out) and need to be recognised by sight.
