PRE-RECEPTION
It has been another busy week in Pre-Reception! Firstly, we have been celebrating Diwali. We listened to stories and had fun creating suncatchers and Rangoli patterns.
In addition to our Diwali celebrations, this week also marks the end of our ‘Homes and Houses’ topic. Our key text was A Place Called Home by Kate Baker, which explores diverse cultures and ways of living around the world. We also read the traditional tale Town Mouse and Country Mouse. The children made their own mice and thought about the different lifestyles of the two characters, discussing where they would like to live.
MATHS
In Maths, we have been sorting objects by size, shape and colour. Then, the children created their own groups and explained how they had been sorted.
PHONICS
In Phonics, we explored the different noises that animals make. The children were encouraged to recreate these sounds using their voices and body percussion.
RECEPTION
LiteracyÂ
This week, we have been learning all about Diwali and how people celebrate it. We read and acted out the story of Rama and Sita and introduced new vocabulary, which the children then used in their imaginative play.Â
Expressive Arts and DesignÂ
Following on from our learning about Diwali, we have been busy creating beautiful Rangoli and Mehendi patterns.
PhonicsÂ
In addition to our work on Diwali, this week we learned the phonemes: h, b, f and l. We practised:Â
- Saying the sounds aloud
- Blending sounds to read words (e.g. l, o, g)
- Writing the letters using cursive formation
Furthermore, we also introduced the tricky word: ‘the’. Tricky words are those that cannot be easily decoded (sounded out) and need to be recognised by sight.
