PRE-RECEPTION
As ever, we have had a very busy week in Pre-Reception.
It was lovely to see so many of you at our sports day on Thursday. It was a lot of fun. The children all tried hard to complete the activities.
maths
The children really enjoyed our Maths theme ‘What comes after…?’. They have put numerals to 10 in order and worked out missing numerals from a number line. Using our key vocabulary, “… comes after …” to order the numerals to 10.
Literacy
The children have continued to enjoy Literacy lessons planned around our key text Whatever next’. They created their own junk model rockets. They looked at different ways to join the resources. The children have been using their models to retell the story.
Phonics
In Phonics, we have introduced the graphemes (the written symbol that represents a sound) ‘s’, ‘a’, ‘t’, ‘p’, ‘i’ and ‘n’. The children have started to blend these sounds for reading simple CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words. We have also introduced segmenting CVC words. We will continue with this next week.
PSHE
We were so impressed with the children’s confidence to put forward their own ideas for how to respect their bodies. They had some fantastic ideas including:
- Brush your teeth
- Wash
- Eat fruit and vegetables
- Sleep
- Exercise
We have also continued to rehearse for our class assembly.
RECEPTION
Understanding the World
This week we have been exploring how and why it is important to look after the world we live in. We shared some lovely books including ‘Clean up!’ by Nathan Bryon. We learnt about how we can help look after the world by turning off lights, recycling and not wasting resources.
Following on from our topic last term when we learnt about life cycles, we have welcomed four tiny caterpillars into the classroom. We are very excited to follow their journey and watch them grow into butterflies. We will keep you posted on their development.
Literacy
We used our knowledge from our ‘Understanding the World’ topic to design a poster and write full sentences on how we can look after the world. The children had some lovely ideas and really enjoyed sharing them.
Phonics
This week, during phonics we focused on long vowel sounds CCVC, CCCVC, CCV and CCVCC. This including reading words such as street, screech and screen. In our daily phonic sessions, we continued to read a sentence and then write it, as well focusing on three spelling. We are reminding the children to check and make sure it is a good sentence by including a capital letter, finger spaces and punctuation.
Maths
In independent Maths work this week we challenged the children to problem solve, answering true and false questions and explaining their answers. During carpet inputs we have started to explore building maps, giving instructions and describing positions. We encouraged the children to use the language ‘build, recreate, behind, below, next to, opposite, under, in front of’.
Sports Day
It was lovely to see many parents at the Sports Day on Thursday. We were proud at how well the children performed, taking part and enjoying the activities.
