PRE-RECEPTION
What a busy half term we have had!
PHONICS
In Phonics, we have taught the children to pronounce the sound ‘e’ phoneme (sound) using the rhyme ‘Open your mouth wide; and say e e e’.
MATHS
In Maths the children have been learning to understand the cardinal principle. This is understanding that the final number they say when counting in order is the whole amount. We have continued to encourage the children to use sentences to discuss the amounts. For example, “There are 2 red counters and 2 blue counters. There are 4 altogether.”
We have also discussed internet safety during our PSED session to coincide with Internet Safety Week.
After half term we will be looking at a new topic, growing and flowers:
- Introducing the ‘r’ sound in Phonics
- Continuing to focus on the number 5 in Maths
- Learning about the traditions and celebrations of Easter
RECEPTION
This week marks the last week on our travels across the world with this half terms topic. Our travels brought us closer to home.
Understanding the World
This week we have been learning about different countries in Europe. We visited France, Italy, Spain, and England. The children explored the flags of each country as well as famous landmarks and the local cuisine. We located the different countries on the map as well as revisiting and locating countries we have learnt about previously. At the end of the week, we celebrated Valentine’s Day by creating Valentine crafts and baking biscuits.
Literacy
In Literacy we encouraged the children to think of facts they had learnt from this term’s topic. We practised saying the sentence to ensure it made sense. They then used their phonic knowledge to record the sentences. Finally, they read back over the sentences to make sure they were correct.
Phonics
This week we completed phonic assessment on all children. This included a selection of phonemes and tricky words we have learnt so far.
Maths
This week we consolidated this half terms learning. We looked at the different ways number can be represented, composition of number 2-8, and doubles. We also explored odd and even numbers. At the end of the week, we completed assessments. The results of your child’s assessment will be discussed with you at the parent’s meetings.
