PRE-RECEPTION
As part of our topic ‘Community Heroes’, the children had the opportunity to explore ‘Little City’. As you will see from the photographs, they had great fun and enjoyed role playing all the different career options. The hairdressing was quite aggressive, and I am not sure the construction workers had the required patience. All the children were keen to do the washing and ironing!
We had a visit from Sidcup Fire Station on Wednesday. We took turns to sit in the driver’s seat and managed to fit all of us into the fire engine.
Maths
In Maths, we have been learning about the number 2. The children have been on a hunt for groups of 2 objects, subitised (said how many without counting) 2; both in dice patterns and irregular patterns.
Phonics
In Phonics, we have worked hard on pronouncing the ‘t’ phoneme (sound). We have used the rhyme ‘open your mouth, put the tip of your tongue behind your teeth and press t t t’, to help them with this.
RECEPTION
Literacy
On Tuesday, the children were very excited to have a visit from Little City. They had the opportunity to explore, and role play different occupations. This included a being a vet, builder, working in a café and police station. Following on with our theme ‘Community Heroes’ we explored the role of a firefighter and have been learning all about a firefighter’s job. The children were surprised to learn that this involved more than putting out fires. On Wednesday a crew from Sidcup Fire Station came to visit us and we learnt more about the equipment used by a fire fighter and the children had an opportunity to sit on the fire engine.
Maths
We have continued to explore number and have focused on the numbers 4 and 5. We looked at subitising and explaining what we could see. We practised number formation and different ways of representing 4 and 5 using pictorial representations and physical objects. Finally, we looked at how we can use a 5 frame to show their findings.
Phonics
This week we introduced more digraphs. A digraph is a grapheme using two letters to represent one phoneme. With children, we frequently reinforce it with the mantra ‘two letters, one sound’. We have learnt the phonemes ‘z’,’ qu’, and ch.’ In class we practised saying the sounds, blending the sounds together to read words, for example ‘r-i-ch.’ We then practised letter formation by writing out the letters cursively. We also learnt the tricky words ‘go,’ ‘no’, ‘to’ and ‘into.’ We continued to read short and write short captions, for example ‘Run in the sun’.
