SENIOR SCHOOL SPORTS UPDATES

Football U12
The U12s Football teams continue to improve as they settle into their new teams and life at Farringtons. After a very difficult opening game for the A Team v Gadd’s Hill and the B Team v St Dunstan’s , both squads have been able to gel and put together some fantastic performances. The U12s A Team built on a dramatic comeback, to draw 4-4 with St Dunstan’s, with a big victory against Radnor House. Whilst the B Team made it the double against Radnor House with a fantastic attacking display at Queen Mary’s Sports Ground.

Football U13
A steady start for the U13s who have taken part in their first A Team and B Team block fixture and have many more games to come this season. Some great performers in training and excellent attendance to Football Club has set up the continuation of our season after half-term with some tough games to come.

Football U14
The U14 A Team have made a flying start to the new season with two wins out of two. The first came against Bethany School, playing a year up against the U15s the team demonstrated real industry and determination to compete with the physical challenge of an older age group. They also produced a dominating performance with a clean sheet against Hall School Wimbledon in the ESFA Small Schools Cup 1st Round and look forward to the 2nd Round v Charter School East Dulwich.

Football U15
A good start to the season for the A Team and B Teams with some regular matches. The A Team have a great game in the cup with Lingfield College, putting in a good performance and just running out of steam towards the end with Lingfield College coming out as winners. The B Team have had some good games with Sackville and Radnor House and are looking forward to some rematches against them both later in the season.

Football U18s
The 2nd XI have kicked off their campaign with three highly competitive fixtures winning two and losing one. Victories against Gad’s Hill and Sackville were well deserved for the 2nd XI who have put together some excellent performances against other schools A Teams. After an opening defeat v Radnor House 1st team, the squad has really come together, led by Year 12 Captain Luke B and Vice-Captain Victor C, they have managed to settle the Year 11s into their first experience of Senior Football.

Football 1st XI
The 1st XI have made an unbeaten start with some impressive results both in the league and ISFA Cup. Wins against Darrick Wood, Beths Grammar School and Ravensbourne School in the league have seen the team sit top with plenty of league matches to come. A very impressive 6-0 win against Wetherby Senior School in the ISFA Cup has seen the team drawn at home in the next round, welcoming Radnor House Twickenham in November. Plenty of goals have been scored across the team, mostly with Year 11 Jensen Wise who currently have 11 in 4 games!

Netball
We have made an excellent start to the Netball season this year. The girls have been committed to the early morning training sessions and working hard during Games lessons to develop their skills and tactics. They have been putting these into practice during fixtures and tournaments this term, where we have had much success. Special mention goes to the U14 A and B Teams who have been undefeated this half-term and to the senior Netball team who won their borough tournament.

Form Time Fun at the Senior School

Our Senior School pupils have been having fun during form time this term! They’ve celebrated International Sudoku Day by tackling challenging puzzles and honing their problem-solving skills. But that’s not all! Our young learners have also had the opportunity to dive into the world of British Sign Language. They were challenged to greet their friends and teachers using sign language and then worked together to learn new words. It’s been a fantastic way for our pupils to develop new skills, have fun, and connect with each other.

Cambridge University TRIP

We, the Year 11 triple scientists, had a fantastic trip to the Cavendish Laboratory of Cambridge University; a day out filled with mind-boggling experiments and spectacular showcases of the wonders of science.

Supernovas and black holes emit high-energy cosmic rays that hit earth all the time, and the physicists at Cambridge have created a ‘Spark Chamber’ to track them! Every time a cosmic ray strikes the chamber, a violent purple – fluorescent flash, as lightning, appears inside the box for a moment. Miniscule amounts of background radiation surround us all the time – our bananas have potassium that emits beta radiation, and our fancy granite countertops emit gamma too, just to name a few. Using a ‘Cloud Chamber’, we can track the movements of these gamma and beta rays as they ionise the propanol vapour, creating contrails in the propanol like a plane does in the sky.

In the British Antarctic Survey exhibition, we learned about what the work of researchers down in Antarctica looks like. As a biologist, you might track the movement patterns of their resident Emperor penguin population, or you might go under the ice, to study the seabed and its weird and wonderful creatures – ever heard of a sea spider, or an ice worm? As a physicist, you might study the fluctuations of the ozone layer above Antarctica, and we learned how prisms are used to measure the amount of UV rays that reach Earth, from which they estimate the mass of the ozone layer.

Cambridge University

A physicist who analyses data received from the James Webb Space Telescope told us all about how it was designed, how it works, and what they do with the data it sends them. The James Webb Space Telescope specialises in photographing in the infrared spectrum, and as light takes time to travel, the further an object is from us, the further back in time the image you see is from. It is for this reason that when the JWST photographs the area in which the first galaxies formed after the big bang, the image it gets is that of how the galaxies looked 13 billion years ago, which enables it to, in essence, photograph the first stars and galaxies that formed after The Big Bang!

Mathworks software can be found in everything from our planes, cars, boats and calculators! They broke down how they designed the $85 million dollar Ingenuity drone, which collected priceless data from the surface of Mars from 2021 to 2024. They demonstrated how drones use feedback systems to balance themselves, and they explained the problems they had to overcome along the way – did you know it can take up to 22 minutes to send a signal to the drone from Earth?

Does shooting an innocent and virtuous Lego man with a ball bearing sound scientific to you? Well, the material scientists showed us how they measure, manipulate, and analyse the properties of materials under various conditions. The poor Lego man was only flattened when put under a hydraulic press, but when shot at, he shattered to bits! Learning how to use and create various materials has innumerable applications, not least in aerospace engineering. In fact, the scientist who presented to us has helped design a probe to land on Europa with their knowledge of how to use materials best.

Finally, we got to vote for our favourite exhibition – I voted, for the British Antarctic Survey. Our trip to Cambridge was both fascinating and inspiring, and it served as a reminder as to how exciting science can be. We would like to thank Mrs Daws for arranging and accompanying us on this trip.

Floreat Scuba Diving Trip

Our intrepid Senior School PADI-qualified Floreat Programme divers had an incredible scuba diving trip to Egypt in the summer holidays! These amazing pupils explored the vibrant coral reefs and fascinating marine life of the Red Sea, all while putting their diving skills to the test.

Beyond the breath-taking underwater world, they also had the chance to experience the rich culture and history of Egypt, creating unforgettable memories that will last a lifetime.

On the 4th July 13 students and 4 teachers travelled to Egypt for the best school trip ever!

On this trip, we completed an Advanced Open Water dive course and an Enriched Air Nitrox course. This means we can use a different gas mix in our tanks, allowing us to dive longer while absorbing less nitrogen. For the Advanced Open Water certification, we had to complete five training dives: Drift, Boat, Deep, Navigation and Peak Performance Buoyancy. In addition to these training dives, we did four recreational dives, including a wreck dive that allowed us to explore a shipwreck.
Completing this advanced course has enabled us to dive down to 30 meters, giving us the opportunity to see more of the ocean and its diverse marine life. Most days, we did at least three dives—one training dive focused on skills needed to pass the course and two recreational dives. During these dives, we encountered stunning coral and a variety of fish, including a green sea turtle, a titan triggerfish, and a barracuda.
On the last day, we did a wreck dive, where we swam around a shipwreck and a crane that had sunk while attempting to offload cargo. When we weren’t diving, we had the option to explore the town and shop. On our final night, we went out for dinner, which was a great way to end the trip.
I had an amazing time and am thrilled to have earned my Advanced Scuba license. Now I can dive all over the world! – Harrison – Year 13
