British Science Week Workshop
As part of our British Science Week celebrations, pupils in Years 7-10 enjoyed an exciting and engaging workshop titled “Music to Your Ears”, delivered by David Price from Science Made Simple on Tuesday 10th March.
The workshop explored the fascinating world of sound waves, bringing complex scientific ideas to life through interactive demonstrations and hands-on experiments. David’s energetic and engaging delivery ensured that pupils were not only learning but actively participating throughout. From understanding how vibrations travel to exploring how pitch and frequency change, pupils were immersed in the science of sound in a memorable way.
A particular highlight for both pupils and staff was the world’s largest whoopie cushion, which created a range of unexpected and amusing sounds while brilliantly demonstrating how vibrations produce sound waves.
Year 9 pupil Femi shared his experience:
“On 10th of March Years 9 and 10 had a Science Workshop called Music to your Ears. My overall experience of the workshop was really positive. David delivered the facts and science in a punchy and fun way and the workshop was really interactive. I was really happy to be able to ask and answer questions often.
David also showed us a lot of simple practical experiments that are easy to repeat at home. My favourite was when he showed us how a wine glass full of water can make sound by rubbing wet fingers around the edge, and how the pitch changes depending on the amount of water.
To summarise, I think the workshop was an interesting way to combine practical demonstrations with the complex science behind them. I look forward to another experience like this.”
The workshop was a fantastic example of how curiosity and creativity can bring science to life beyond the classroom.
Curiosity in Action: In Class Science Week Activities
Throughout British Science Week, pupils across all year groups engaged in a wide range of thought provoking and hands on activities, all centred around this year’s theme: Curiosity. Each activity encouraged pupils to ask questions, explore ideas, and think like scientists.
In Years 7 and 8, pupils explored big questions about the world around them. Year 7 pupils investigated whether machines make better decisions than humans through a card sort activity focused on artificial intelligence and ethics. They also carried out a chromatography experiment to uncover whether sweets are truly the same colour, revealing hidden dyes and learning about mixtures.
Year 8 pupils debated whether reintroducing wolves could transform ecosystems, developing their understanding of biodiversity and ecological balance. Alongside this, both Year 7 and 8 pupils took part in a British Science Week poster competition, creatively exploring how science can improve children’s lives now and in the future.
At GCSE level, pupils tackled more advanced investigations. Biology pupils took part in a moss safari, analysing moss samples from our grounds to uncover environmental patterns. Physics pupils designed and tested wind turbines, competing to create models capable of lifting a cup using only wind power. Meanwhile, Year 10 Chemistry pupils investigated what makes the “perfect cup of tea,” linking scientific concepts such as diffusion, temperature, and concentration to a classic British staple.
These activities showcased the breadth of Science at Farringtons and gave every pupil the opportunity to engage, question and discover.
British Science Week House Challenges: Engineering Through Curiosity
British Science Week also saw pupils take part in exciting House competitions, putting their creativity, teamwork, and problem solving skills to the test.
Year 7 pupils participated in the spaghetti tower challenge, where they were tasked with building the tallest freestanding structure using only spaghetti and marshmallows. The challenge encouraged pupils to think like engineers, experimenting with different designs and learning from trial and error as they refined their structures. Davies House were crowned winners with an impressive freestanding structure, showcasing excellent teamwork and design.
Meanwhile, pupils in Years 8–13 took on the paper bridge challenge. Working in teams, they designed and constructed bridges using only paper, with the aim of holding as many 1p coins as possible. This activity required careful planning, resilience, and an understanding of forces and structural strength. The challenge proved incredibly successful during form time, with some pupils managing to suspend the maximum 30 coins above their bridges.
It was fantastic to see such enthusiasm and creativity on display across both events, with pupils fully embracing the challenges. Fun was had by both staff and pupils, making these activities a highlight of British Science Week.
Both challenges were fantastic examples of curiosity in action. Pupils tested ideas, adapted their designs, and discovered that failure is often an important step towards success in Science and Engineering.

After a lovely meal full of chatter and anticipation, they made their way to the West End to see Hamilton. The show was a huge hit with everyone and on the way back, the pupils were full of smiles and animated conversation, reliving their favourite moments from the musical. A fantastic night out and the perfect boost after a busy mock exam season.
COOK OFFOur boarders turned up the heat this term for an epic Cook Off in the Food & Nutrition classrooms! It was brilliant to see our pupils channelling their inner chefs after school, whipping up some truly wonderful creations.
RAISING FUNDS FOR UKRAINEThis term, we welcomed former pupils of Farringtons back into school to hold assemblies to all year groups across the Prep and Senior School. They came in to talk about their mission to raise funds to purchase a mini bus for an orphanage they are supporting in Ukraine. The alumni first visited the orphanage on a school trip back in 2015-16 after which they maintained contact and have been supporting by sending care parcels over the years.
However, they now would like to enlist the help of current pupils to help them raise money to purchase a much needed mini-bus to enable those residents of the home that are currently unable to leave due to disabilities.
Watch this space for more details on how we will be coming together to support this cause!
