Life in the Sixth Form

Sixth Form dinner

Life in the Sixth Form at Farringtons is an incredibly enriching and rewarding experience. Throughout my time in Years 12 & 13 I have enjoyed taking part in all of the extra-curricular activities that have been offered to me. In Year 12 this involved me becoming a Careers Ambassador, Peer Mentor and Coaching Years 3 & 4 Netball Club after school. This allowed me to meet new friends and staff members, as well as developing my interpersonal skills and self-confidence.

One of the biggest highlights throughout my time at Farringtons was joining the netball team, as it has allowed me to develop new relationships with the PE department and students, whilst developing my teamwork and leadership skills. The weekly training sessions and frequent games have given me an unmatched sense of camaraderie and accomplishment throughout the years and provided me with invaluable skills such as perseverance, that I hope to take with me into later life.

Being in the Sixth Form is a great experience due to the balance between being rewarded for our hard work and being encouraged to push ourselves further. One recent example of this is the Sixth Form dinner hosted by the school this Friday night, serving as a reward and thank you for the Year 12 and Year 13’s work and behaviour during the first term of this school year. This is one of the many opportunities I’ve had throughout my time at Farringtons to develop deeper, personal connections with different year groups and staff members I usually wouldn’t talk to. As well as to connect with my current friends, classmates and Form Tutors on a more personal level.

As Year 7 Prefect, I have had the opportunity to give back to my school community by helping organise and attend assemblies, supporting pupils with the jump from primary to secondary education and assisting Form Tutors with various day-to-day activities. I’ve also had the opportunity to guide prospective parents and pupils during Open Days, assist with after school occasions such as the Christmas Carol Service and marshal at school-wide fixtures and all-day sports occasions e.g. Sports Day and tournaments.

The Sixth Form centre at Farringtons also provides a range of spaces that cater to both academic and social life. There are many designated workspaces, such as the study rooms, to focus on schoolwork without distractions, which I find useful and enjoy revising in, as well as the two common rooms that are perfect for providing a space to unwind and socialise during lunch times and free periods.

One of my favourite aspects of Farringtons, and a big reason as to why I decided to stay on for Sixth Form, is the incredibly supportive staff who go out of their way to motivate and guide us throughout our A-levels. This has become even more evident during the UCAS application process, where we have had the opportunity to ask a multitude of teachers for feedback on our personal statements, ask questions about the process and gain motivation throughout the application. Furthermore, we have had lots of support in the form of workshops and assemblies from the Careers department and Sixth Form tutors about UCAS applications, apprenticeship opportunities and preparations for future job prospects. With the most support coming from our Head of Sixth Form – Ms Jackson. Her guidance, encouragement and support for all students throughout the whole of Sixth Form is extremely impactful, particularly when navigating the workload of A-levels, extracurricular activities and prefect responsibilities.
