Sport and Physical Education

Although close to London, Farringtons is fortunate to have 25 acres of land.

Such space permits 1 hockey pitch, 4 netball courts, a cross-country track, 200m athletics track and two rounders squares as well as a 20m outdoor heated swimming pool, all on site.

In addition there is a large Sports Hall.  This two-storey building provides space for a mirrored Dance Studio with sprung wooden floor, a Fitness Room and a classroom.

Indoor courts are marked for Volleyball, Basketball, Indoor Tennis, Badminton and Netball. There is space for Table Tennis, Trampolining, Gymnastics and Fencing.

All students in Years 7 and 8 have 150 minutes of PE per week.  The activities involve health related fitness, netball, hockey, gymnastics and dance in the winter terms and athletics, tennis, rounders and swimming in the summer months.

In Year 9 all girls have 100 minutes of PE per week.  Skills are consolidated, plus basketball and volleyball are introduced to the timetable.

Year 7 Dance

Year 9 Dance with Miss Allen

In Years 10 and 11, most girls participate for 100 minutes per week.  The emphasis of the core curriculum changes slightly to 'educate for leisure'.

Timetable permitting, the Sixth Form are expected to particiapate in PE on a Wednesday afternoon.  Activities are offered on and off site and vary between badminton on site, through to crazy golf at a local golf centre.  Last year, all Lower Sixth took part in a self-defence course.

Examination courses are offered at both GCSE and A Level.  Both courses take AQA examinations.

At GCSE there is a good uptake every year and results are reguarly high.  Girls with an interest and ability in this subject are encouraged to participate.  A Level PE is offered to students who have achieved an A or A* at GCSE.  Any student with grades below A or A* will be considered on an individual basis.  This course involves both theoretical and practical comp0nents.

Inter House Activities

During the year Inter House Competitions involving all students take place.  they are always great fun but highly competitive.

Sports Scholarship

There is an opportunity for students to apply for a Sports Scholarship for entry into Year 7.  Applicants for this award should be competent, all-round athletes.  Specialist and exceptional performance in one area is not a pre-requestive.

On Scholarship Morning we are looking at the applicants potential in a variety of activities including fitness tests, ball skills and a short gymnastic or dance rountine to music.

Dance Competition

Every March, the Dance Competition takes place.  This is open to all girls in the senior school.  It is their opportunity to demonstrate their artistic ability and creativity and work individually or in groups.  Any dance style or technique may be performed.  Each year more students participate and as the standard improves annually it is becoming increasingly difficult to judge.

Biathlon

During the summer, the Biathlon take place.  It includes running 800m followed immediately by a 400m swim.  All girls in Years 7 - 9 plus GCSE students take part, plus any other volunteers.  Members of staff reguarly compete - even the Head Mistress has taken part!  Although it is a competition, many see it as a personal challenge and their sense of achievement at completing the course is wonderful to see.

Extra-curricular Activities

These take place during the lunch hour and after school.  It is an opportunity for skills taught in lessons to be consolidated and developed and in many activities the chance to be a member of a competitive team.  the uptake is good and all students, regardless of ability are encouraged to attend.

There are representative teams in cross-country, athletics, hockey, netball, soccer, swimming, tennis and rounders.  Every year local, county and national competitions are entered.
