Key Stage 3 (Year 7 - 9) Curriculum
The Senior School follows the National Curriculum with, as its goal, almost all Year 11 students taking 10 GCSE examinations.
Farringtons has a long commitment to excellence and opportunity in girls' education. The curriculum reflects this, providing a wide range of modern and traditional subjects from which to make the final GCSE choices.
During the first 3 years in the Senior School, the emphasis is placed on sound preparation in basic academic skills and, at the end of year 9, thorough advice on appropriate GCSE options is provided.
In addition to the National Curriculum, core subjects of English, Mathematics and Science, plus Religious Studies and a Modern Foreign Language, girls in Years 7 -9 will also study subjects which they may choose as an option at GCSE such as History, Geography, Information Technology, Art & Ceramics, Music, Drama, Business Studies, Food Technology and Textiles.
French is offered in Year 7 in addition to Spanish. In Year 7, no previous knowledge of French is assumed. Careers education also begins in Year 9.
A structured Personal and Social Education course is also delivered by school staff aided by visiting speakers. PSE introduces and discusses key moral, ethical and social issues at appropriate times in the girls' lives. It aims to foster a greater understanding of today's society and to assist them in taking responsibilities for their own and their fellows' well-being.
Enthusiastic commitment to sport, music and drama is also encouraged since they all build confidence and develop the team working skills so essential in life beyond school.
In the Senior School, each Year is divided into 2 forms, with an average of 22 - 24 girls, all following the same syllabus in each subject. Year 7 & 8 girls follow an integrated Science course until Year 9 when the 3 Sciences are taught separately. The Senior School timetable is divided into 40 periods of 40 minutes duration.
